Partnering with Styles 4 Kidz continues to be some of my favorite work and journeying with this organization is a privilege. We have watched this organization inspire, empower, and serve their community over the last 10 years. They have still expanded in exciting ways this past year despite restrictions and hardship. S4K is a movement and they are moving forward in creating and celebrating the beautiful hairstyles that are giving kids positive self esteem and ethnic pride and allowing families to feel empowered and equipped to care for their children’s hair and skin.
They invited me to capture their Board of Directors last weekend at what would normally be their annual Gala . This year S4K kept the night extremely small with distancing and safety protocols while still being able to thank a few outstanding donors, staff, board members, and volunteers.
The founder of S4K Tamekia Swint shared during a LIVE on Facebook, “we saw our programs expand and reach even more people because we were forced to take them online during the Covid crisis. We have seen our educational programs reach all the way to South Africa.” As is true for every other business and organization things are drastically different for Styles 4 Kidz this year but their “Covid Pivot” has not slowed them down in pursuing their vision with excellence and creativity. They exceeded their goal of serving 200 families and serving over 600 kids this year because with virtual training it actually allowed their reach to be further. They also have moved into a beautiful and expanded salon space in Oak Park that meant that social distancing was possible (you can book an appointment here). S4K has also raised $260,000 despite the current crisis and are asking supporters to continue to partner and give to this great work to help them reach their goals. You can learn more about how to partner with S4K here.
One of the most moving moments of the night was when Tamekia’s husband Ryan received a Volunteer Award for his tireless support of her and the organization. For years I have partnered with S4K and seen firsthand that he is always present working behind the scenes to support and encourage his wife in her calling to lead in powerful ways. Capturing the moment he received the award was so special. No one is successful alone- we all have so many people backing us up and Tamekia; on behalf of the organization, took the opportunity to thank the following award recipients;
Steve Raquel: Volunteer of the Year (and new board member)
Donor of the Year: Alex Ortega of Reliance Plumbing who generously donated the plumbing work necessary for them to open the new space.
Employee of the Year; Christy James
10 Years of Service: Ryan Swint
Styles 4 Kidz will continue to impact our communities- look out and follow them to continue to see the great work they are doing!
