Tamekia Swint, founder and executive director of Styles 4 Kidz is adding Children’s Book Author to her amazing list of accomplishments. She is a force, visionary leader, and her passion is empowering Black young people to love themselves and their hair. Her work with the salon Styles 4 Kidz has allowed her and her team to serve so many young people over the past years. I am so grateful for being invited to capture the organization and they grow and expand- even with the challenges of 2020. Her new book, Your Hair is Your Crown is available widely February 1, 2021 and we captured these storytelling images to celebrate the launch.
This book follows young people from birth through the older years and their hair journey focusing on celebrating, caring for, and loving their natural hair. When I read the book to my daughter she immediately said, “everyone in this book looks like me!” That is powerful. It is illustrated and written to bring positive representation of Black culture and natural, textured hair. Grab your copy early and support the work of Styles 4 Kidz!
