The number one question I get for brand storytelling sessions is “what do I wear?” It can feel overwhelming to choose your look/s after you book but I promise you got this and I am here to help!
You want to first and foremost FEEL confident in what you are wearing so do not leave this until the last minute. Make sure you have tried everything on you plan to wear recently and walked, sat down, bend over, etc and make sure everything you are thinking of wearing fits you well and allows movement.
Here are my top tips in choosing your looks:
Know Your Brand
The looks you choose will help tell the story of who you are and what you offer as your brand.
Then think through what you choose based on what your brand is all about? Are you serving high end clients and want a polished professional look? Are you a healthcare provider that wants to incorporate your scrubs? Are you a whimsy, fun creative that wants to highlight your love of pattern and color? You get to choose! Do you want neutral colors or more vibrant hues? Also, keep in mind on a typical brand storytelling session you will have at least 3 looks so you can diversify too (more suggestions on that later). Here are some great examples of brand look choices.
Brand Voice & Colors
This is a continuation from the first tip but think about how you will use your images. If they will be used on your website and socials think about choosing colors that complement your brand colors. This can be a great way to work in your brand colors too without everything being so “matchy.”
While it isn’t necessary to match your brand colors, it can be a great way to integrate your brand visually. If there are already colors that you use often on your website and socials and your audience is aware of that, you can absolutely choose some items of clothing that highlight these colors. Just make sure what you choose will compliment your website design and colors and look great on your socials too.
Also above all make sure you like the way you look because what colors look best on you may not look the best on someone else. Maybe you love pattern and vibrant color but your bff really does look best in black. My best advice is to get curious about what colors look best on you. What seems to make your eyes pop? Do warmer or cooler colors get you compliments? Find as many colors in your closet and try then on to see what you like best. Make sure you do this during the day in a space with natural light for the best results.
Clothing with writing and logos on it tends to be distracting just like crazy patterns do. However, if the logo or phrase is tasteful and not tacky, in theme with our session vibes, and fits your personality or brand, I’m a fan of breaking this rule. 🙂
These images perfectly show what I mean; for this amazing leader’s session she wanted to share her story of her brand as a therapist and Black female leader so it was perfect! We also changed her look to make sure she had multiple options in her gallery. I encourage you to chat to me during our phone consult or text/call me if you need help figuring out if logos or writing makes sense for your session.
Your look sets a tone so make sure you love what you choose. You will feel and LOOK more confident!
Think Diversity & Layers
One of the BEST parts of a branding storytelling session is we have enough time for multiple looks! Don’t let that intimidate you- let it open up the opportunity for creativity and diversity so when you get your gallery you have content for DAYZ! Think through looks that will give you diversity in your gallery and also allow for different poses. For example if you have a shorter skirt for one look then make sure another look is pants so you can sit, bend, etc. I LOVE layers for visual interest.
Patterns and textures (my favorites: embroidery, leather, linen, silk, lace, etc.) are a great way to add visual interest to your images. We want to avoid patterns that overwhelm the entire image and pull your eye away from your fabulous self.
Visual Interest-Think variety! Jean Jacket, moto jacket, cardigan, sweater, necklace, scarf, button up shirt, headband, tights, hats, ties, earrings, bracelets, vest, boots. Layers & accessories add dimension and texture, creating richness to the overall look. I always say add 1-2 extra thing(s) than you would wear on a normal day.
I will FOREVER be your HYPE SQUAD and remind you of your created beauty, but let’s keep it 100: we all have things about ourselves we want to emphasize, and others we want to minimize. If you’re particularly self conscious about a part of your body choose clothing that highlights what you love and minimizes what you don’t. If having bare upper arms makes you feel uncomfortable, stay away from sleeveless dresses or tops. If you love your strong legs make sure a skirt or shorts are part of one look.
If you still feel overwhelmed at the idea of choosing clothes for your brand storytelling session?
You can hire a professional stylist! Many boutiques offer personal styling services that can be incredibly helpful. Some stores even have very helpful stylist help in store- I love Evereve for women professionals.
I also send all my clients an extended Look Guide and am available to chat through what options might be best for your session. You can send my mirror selfies and I will be you photog BFF to help you choose what looks fabulous on you! Don’t stress. You are going to be amazing.
