Let’s be real: being in front of the camera is never easy. I get it- it is vulnerable and we can all feel nervous and wonder- what will I look like? I got you.
The good news? You don’t need to be a supermodel to get headshots you love. You just need a little prep, the right mindset, and to trust the process.
Here’s how to make the experience way less stressful—and actually fun:
Although I see the value in learning more about your colors I also want you to not over think this! Here’s the truth: what looks good on you is totally unique to you.
If you can, I highly recommend working with one the amazing stylist I partner with to know your colors and what could look fire on you: you can learn more about the stylist and see what’s included here (just email me and I can hook you up).
Not ready for that? Do the mirror test. Put on different tops and notice how your skin, eyes, and even energy look in each. If there’s something you want to love but it always feels off, it’s probably not your color or cut. Don’t fight it. For photos, stick to the pieces that make you look and feel like your best self.
Headshots are about you, not your outfit. Solids always win. Patterns? Sometimes but they can distract so choose carefully and make sure they feel like your brand. Logos? in general: Nope. (You don’t want to cringe at your “trendy 2025 logo tee” when you’re still using that photo in 2026.) If you keep it simple but add personality with accessories or shoes- perfect!
Spoiler: most headshots don’t even show your pants or shoes. So don’t spiral over what’s happening below the waist unless we’re shooting full-body and that is part of our plan (for Brand Boost Minis we will so just be prepared). Put your energy where it counts (the part of you that actually makes it in the frame) and don’t stress buying an entire new look unless that is fun for you. Layers and textures are good- see the post on fire looks for more suggestions.
Your outfit could be fire, but if you freeze into stiff poses and are totally uncomfortable. This is not really an issue in my extended Brand Storytelling Sessions because we have enough time to really allow you to relax and go with the flow but headshot sessions are short so here are a few tips: Spend 10 minutes in the mirror. Try different smiles, tilts, angles. Notice what feels natural and communicate with me if you want to try certain poses. Also, keep in mind it is my job to pose and direct you- I focus more on movement to help you look your best. I got you!
I’ll be honest—if I force a smile, I look… dead inside. But when I think about something funny? I light up. That’s the version of me I want in my images, and I only figured it out by practicing and seeing what I love. Practice a bit because it pays off in your headshots.
Play up what you love, downplay what you don’t. For me? Strapless is a no-go because I don’t love highlighting my upper arms in such a tight shot. If you don’t like yourself in shorts wear pants- make sure you choose what is good for your body and confidence not just what is trendy. You get to decide what feels good on your body, and we’ll style around it.
If you’re planning a haircut, do it about a week before your shoot. That way it has time to settle in, and you’re not dealing with that “fresh chop” awkwardness.
Think ahead about what makes you feel confident. Nails (please make sure they are either newly done or clean with no chipped polish), spray tan (ONLY if you have done it before and love the results because orange skin in a headshot is not cute) new glasses, teeth whitening- all totally optional, but if it matters to you, schedule it in. It’s all about setting yourself up to feel your best.
Jewelry? Accessories? Yes please….but keep it intentional. Simple always works. Statement or bolder pieces can shine if they are on brand for you. If bold jewelry is your thing, rock it. Your headshots should look like you, not a watered-down version.
Even if you don’t normally wear makeup, a little extra goes a long way on camera. Think: a touch more coverage, lashes, and definitely some color on your lips. I can book this for you with one of the amazing artists I partner with- just reach out and remember it is included in some Brand Storytelling packages.
No one’s saying you need a full glam team but skipping makeup altogether can usually read flat in photos. Unless- of course that is YOUR brand because we are all about authenticity here. In general, a pop of lipstick and lashes can be the difference between “fine” and “fierce.”
You’ve got it easier—enjoy it. Here’s the crash course:
Headshots aren’t about looking perfect. They’re about looking like you—confident, elevated, and aligned with your brand. With a little prep (and the right photographer 😉), my goal is that you’ll feel at ease (and hyped up) in front of my camera and walk away with images you actually love to use.
