West Suburban Community Pantry celebrated their 10 year anniversary with a Culinary Challenge Event on Sunday night. The event was in person this year and people came up to celebrate and support the good work WSCP does in the community. At West Suburban Community Pantry, all are welcome. We strive to eliminate barriers to food security, but we also understand that hunger is only the most immediate need. We serve as a bridge to vital resources that empower our shoppers, fostering families in crisis to better futures, and reach our goal of a community without hunger. WSCP has pivoted and continued to expand despite the challenges of the last few years and they are serving more people than ever. In June I was with them to celebrate the opening of their newly renovated space that is helping to serve even more people in the community.
There was a 7 course dinner expertly prepared by local Chefs and served family style. Chefs worked from the center-stage observation kitchen so guests could see each course finished and plated live.
The Chefs that participated and collaborated to present the courses:
Chef Zac Rogers, Elements at Water Street
Chef Terrell Cole, Dark Horse Pastries
Chef Raul Armento, Belgio’s Catering
Chef John Brandou, Sixty-Four Wine Bar & Kitchen
Chef Scott Wallett, Jr., Chicago Marriott Naperville
Chef Maya Nahouli, The Foxtail
Chef Steven Vander Baan, Eddie Merlot’s
Attendees were able to sample the food and then vote on a winner. There was also a silent and live auction, cartoon portraiture drawings available, and Laura Coyle; the Executive Director shared stories of impact and invited attendees to join the work through giving and volunteering. The team at WSCP led by Lisa Spaeth planned a fabulous evening for a great cause.
The 2022 People’s Choice Winner being Zac Rogers with a seared scallop dish that was a favorite! 100% of the proceeds from the event allow the Pantry continue offer food and supportive services to their neighbors in need throughout DuPage County, Bolingbrook, and Romeoville. With the generous support from this event and year round support, WSCP will continue to serve over 5,600 adults, children, and senior citizens that seek their assistance each month.
